Oil Change at Zimbrick Hyundai | Madison | Sun Prairie WI

Oil changes are easily overlooked. Oftentimes, you won't necessarily know you need an oil change until you actually check. It can slip your mind because your car might be running fine for months at a time. Then one day, the need for maintenance becomes obvious when weird noises start coming from under the hood.

A quality oil change can make a tremendous difference in the operation and health of your vehicle. Take a moment to learn why you need to have an oil change, how often you should have it done, and where you'll get the best service.

Regular Oil Changes Keep Your Engine Functioning

A car's engine is a system of moving parts. The parts are made of metal, and they all come into contact with one another, creating friction. If there wasn't oil to lubricate your engine, the heat from all that friction would cause the individual components to fuse together, warp, or break.

Oil can deteriorate over time and ceases to properly lubricate those moving parts. It may also begin to emanate an unpleasant smell, or becomes dirty, which indicates the need for an oil change. Failure to regularly change your oil can result in contaminants forming in the crankcase, eaten metal parts, collected water, sludge formation, and worse.

Checking Your Oil with a Dipstick

A dipstick helps you check to see if the oil needs to be changed.

  1. First, make sure your engine has been cold for at least ten minutes.
  2. After popping your hood, locate the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe it across a lint-free cloth.
  4. Then place the dipstick back in again and pull it out.
  5. Check for a film of oil on the end of the dipstick.

Note how high the oil level goes up the stick and what color the oil is. If it's a clear golden brown color, you're good to go. If it's a silty dark brown or black with particles floating in it, it's time to bring your car in for service. You may also need to add oil if your levels are too low.

Schedule An Appointment for Your Next Oil Change

If you're like most people, you don't make a habit of checking your oil. Some service centers place a small sticker in the window somewhere indicating the next recommended oil change. However, even if you don't have a sticker from a previous change, you can use a few factors to know when to change your oil.

The general recommendation for oil changes are every 3,000 to 10,000 miles. It's likely best-unless you have a much older car-to seek service every 5,000 miles. However, your needs may vary. If you travel a lot, whether it's for a long daily commute or frequent trips out of town, you'll need more frequent oil changes than someone who primarily uses the vehicle for small errands. Older vehicles also need more frequent oil changes.

Whether you're hauling the travel soccer team to weekend tournaments in a Santa Fe or running local errands in an Elantra, make sure you know your driving habits to understand when to bring in your vehicle for an oil change.
